Physiotherapy vs Remedial Massage: Which Treatment Do You Need?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from people searching for treatment in Canberra. Both physiotherapists and remedial massage therapists treat musculoskeletal pain and injury — but their scopes, approaches, and Medicare eligibility differ significantly.

What Does a Physiotherapist Do?

Physiotherapists are AHPRA-registered allied health professionals who complete a four-year university degree. Their scope of practice is broad and includes:

  • Diagnosing musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiorespiratory conditions
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Exercise prescription and movement retraining
  • Manual therapy (joint mobilisation, manipulation)
  • Dry needling and electrotherapy
  • WorkCover and TAC/MACA claims management

Physiotherapy sessions are typically 30–45 minutes, highly exercise-focused, and may involve more assessment than hands-on treatment in a single session.

What Does a Remedial Massage Therapist Do?

Remedial massage therapists hold at minimum a Diploma of Remedial Massage and specialise in soft tissue treatment. Their focus is on:

  • Releasing tight, restricted, and overworked muscles
  • Reducing trigger point activity and myofascial tension
  • Improving circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Supporting recovery from sports and physical activity
  • Managing chronic pain conditions (back pain, headaches, etc.)

Sessions are typically 60–90 minutes of hands-on treatment, with more focus on soft tissue work than exercise prescription.

Medicare and Health Insurance

Physiotherapy is accessible via Medicare under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan (formerly Enhanced Primary Care) — your GP can refer you for up to 5 subsidised sessions per calendar year. Private health extras usually cover physiotherapy at a higher rebate than massage.

Remedial massage is covered by most private health extras policies, but is not covered by Medicare. The out-of-pocket cost per session is often lower than physiotherapy, making it more accessible for ongoing maintenance.

Which Should You Choose?

See a physiotherapist if you have a diagnosed injury requiring rehabilitation, post-surgical recovery, a neurological or joint condition, or need a WorkCover certificate.

Choose a remedial massage therapist if your main concerns are muscle tightness, chronic tension, stress-related pain, or soft tissue recovery — particularly if you want longer, more hands-on sessions.

Many of the best clinics in Canberra offer both under the same roof. You can find physiotherapy clinics in Canberra and remedial massage therapists on RejuvenatePath.
