How to Choose the Right Massage Therapist in the ACT

With hundreds of massage therapists practising across the ACT — from Gungahlin to Woden — choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. This guide gives you a practical framework to find someone qualified, experienced, and well-matched to your needs.

1. Check Their Qualifications

In Australia, anyone can legally call themselves a "massage therapist" without formal training. To protect yourself, look for therapists who hold at minimum a Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT52021) or equivalent. This is the industry standard for remedial and therapeutic massage.

Better still, check whether they're a member of a professional association:

  • ATMS (Australian Traditional Medicine Society)
  • Massage & Myotherapy Australia (MMA)
  • AAMT (Australian Association of Massage Therapists)

Members must maintain current qualifications, first aid, and professional development hours.

2. Confirm Health Fund Rebate Eligibility

If you have private health insurance with extras cover, your remedial massage sessions may be partly rebatable. Ask the clinic directly whether their therapists are registered with your fund (Medibank, BUPA, HCF, NIB, etc.). This can save you $20–40 per session.

3. Match Their Specialisation to Your Needs

Many therapists have additional training or experience in specific areas:

  • Sports massage — ideal for runners, cyclists, and gym-goers
  • Pregnancy massage — requires specialist training in safe positioning and contraindications
  • Lymphatic drainage — used post-surgery and for managing lymphoedema
  • Dry needling — additional certification required

If you have a specific condition, make sure your therapist has experience treating it.

4. Read Verified Reviews

Look for clinics with consistent 4–5 star reviews that mention specific therapists by name. Generic reviews ("great massage!") are less useful than detailed ones that describe the treatment, conditions addressed, and outcomes.

5. Consider Proximity and Availability

The best therapist in the world won't help if they're inconvenient to get to. Search by your Canberra suburb to find highly-rated therapists close to home or work:

6. Book a Trial Session

Don't commit to a package until you've had a single session. A good therapist will take a thorough history, explain their treatment plan, and check in with you throughout the session. If something doesn't feel right — communication, technique, or bedside manner — it's completely fine to try someone else.
